TV and media could do a lot more to help regenerate the economy in the UK. The latest government initiatives aimed at boosting entrepreneurship and new businesses, would be far more effective if TV and media were on board too.
TV is one of the most powerful mediums on the planet: it can create (and break) stars overnight, sway public opinion in an instant, start new trends and even shape the future. Think about it, teenagers these days are far more interested in being famous as a career, rather than going for traditional jobs, and TV has been a major influence in this change.
TV is full of programmes that either create celebrities or promote them and their lifestyles. Scan the channels on any given day and you are sure to find programmes relating to lifestyle, reality TV and chat shows (usually includes the same bunch of celebrities who hop from one chat show to the next, promoting themselves). Occasionally we get programmes that are inspiring, like Dragon’s Den, The Apprentice, The Secret Millionnaire and even Undercover Boss. But sadly even they have become marred by the ‘celebrity’ culture, or become so predictable that we are no longer learning anything new from them.
There is very little on TV that encourages new business, that inspires and influences creativity and innovation, that promotes careers and education, that make people want to get up and do something that will help boost the economy. Yes there are channels with business content, but these are geared more towards established businesses and large corporates.
Isn’t it time we had some alternative viewing that helps motivate the nation into doing something positive – something that creates new business, new jobs and wealth? And I don't mean the occassional programme or series, I mean a dedicated channel 24/7 365 days a year!
I would personally like to see more role models (both young and old). People who have achieved things through sheer determination, maybe against the odds. People who have gone into industries that are flooded, yet still made a successful business out of it - maybe through doing something different or innovative. We all love a success story - particularly those we can relate to. On my wish list is a channel that focuses solely on SMEs, entrepreneurship, new start-ups, careers and education, and the content might include:
- Fly on the wall documentaries relating to entrepreneurs starting out and building businesses
- Fly on the wall for specific jobs or industries
- Building businesses out of hobbies (i.e. crafts, hairdressing, fashion, DIY, writing etc.)
- Expert advice on managing a business i.e. sales, marketing, advertising, business plans etc.
- Global trends, facts and figures about new start-ups, inventions, innovations
- Technologies for business
- Practical skills development i.e. workshops on interviews, presentations, confidence building, leadership, negotiating
- Programmes targeting specific groups (i.e. school leavers, long term unemployed, disabled, over 50s). Helpful advice on finding a job, setting up a business, the pros and cons that each group might face, how to overcome them etc.
- Finding investors, funding, business mentors - maybe a show that brings together business investors/angels/mentors with budding entrepreneurs or struggling businesses - a kind of Dragons Den/Blind Date where they are matched, but the investors and entrepreneurs change each week to provide more opportunities
- Careers – insights into different careers including education, skills and competencies required
- Specialist chat shows with inspirational guests from the business world, highlighting key trends, taking the latest business news and explaining what it means in simple terms to SMEs etc.
- Rags to riches stories
TELL US WHAT YOU THINK. WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ON SUCH A CHANNEL?
Do you feel its time for a change? Would you like to see more inspirational TV that isn't aimed at having a career in entertainment or being famous? What would you like to see on a channel like this? Maybe you think the 'celebrity wannabe' culture is a good thing and want to see more of that?

It would be a good idea, maybe include programs for diversifying into new areas (there must be loads of people out there who have lost or on verge of losing their business due to recession) they will have many skills that can be transferred to a new business maybe entirely different, and would be inspirational to see them turning things around ;-)
Cameron is encouraging new business startups so be good for programs to cover what the government are actually offering in terms of support and be good to have input from larger business owners, i dont just mean news reports but someone that can cut through all the red tape and bureocracy (sorry can't spell it) and tell us in plain english, what help there is, how to get started etc.
I'd like to see more fly on wall stuff. Im at uni at mo and not sure which industry would best suit me. Would also be good to see some kind of day in the life of a ... to give a flavour of what working in a particular job would be like. The idea of having a chanel dedicated to this sort of stuff is good
I am fed up with the celebrity culture too. Its gone too far. Ask my daughter (who is 11) what she wants to be and the answer is 'famous' or 'an actress', 'a singer'. Reality shows like, BB, TOWIE are sending out all the wrong messages to our kids. Kids these days do need more role models, one of the best shows on TV at the moment is the apprentice - and the last young apprentice was brilliant IMHO

I would certainly welcome this. I find there is alot of dross on TV at the moment. We don't all watch soaps, so come on virgin tv - why not start the ball rolling! Or yes, Peter Jones seems to be into TV production I think. Instead of always reading the negative stories about the recession, tell us about the success stories
